Wiretapping

Recommended Posts

Mobile phones are used daily for organizing and setting up drug deals, if PD could wiretap phones via warrants it would incentivize criminals to speak less freely on mobiles and get them to use the phone booths which can act as the "safe" way for criminals to make calls or using burner phones.

Yeah, pal, 9/11 hasn’t happened yet. This shit would not fly in 1990.

Come back in 12 years once we get the Patriot Act.

Legislation is already on the books in diverge it just isn't used bc it's aids to enforce it.

People are projecting modern surveillance backwards. In 1990, broad electronic surveillance of Americans was far more controversial, more legally constrained, and much less technologically pervasive than it became after the post-9/11 expansion of surveillance powers. The USA PATRIOT Act didn’t invent wiretapping, but it dramatically expanded the government’s ability to conduct surveillance and shifted public and legal attitudes toward it. Treating 1990 NYC like authorities could casually tap mobile phones on demand is anachronistic. If you’re trying to roleplay the period authentically, investigations should rely far more on informants, physical surveillance, warrants, undercover work, and old-fashioned detective work. We should not project modern expectations of ubiquitous electronic monitoring into 1990s RP.

I will assume it was RICO, murder, or major drug investigations that led to these taps? There were limits on them or what? Surveillance has existed forever in LE but it’s supposed to be physical surveillance mostly with minimal device planting for some other recordings that were often inadmissible without specific permissions laid out in a warrant. A lot of the time they did trash pulls, planted devices in public pay phones for short periods, and watched people from unmarked vehicles. Plus, undercover use… see how well that turns out most of the time.
