Why is mugging so hated?

Recommended Posts

Mugging has been a staple in diverge for years.
If we cant mug people why is it in the server? Even if you follow all in game rules you still get hit for things because its so disliked

Mugging is a part of roleplay, if you never had a risk going into the ghetto, what's the point of there being a ghetto?

It usually depends on who you mug and how I've personally mugged a few people and I don't think anyone hates me for it lol? It's usually hated when all you do is mug or make it your "personality" in the server, mugging someone once in a blue moon is fine but just doing it multiple times a week, is to me absurd

People hate it because you can lose items and suffer character destruction.

People are punished for breaking the rules around mugging (which there are many) because each mug and the context behind it is generally nuanced.

Using it to target people for pks (engaging with it in bad faith) using alt characters to mug avoiding all risk, only mugging and not roleplaying as a symptom of dark rp brain.

Mugging is an integral part of criminal aspects of the server and even as controversial as it is or has been it remains a part of the game, but it has recognizably flawed attributes which are mediated and covered by rules.

Engage with it properly and don't be surprised if you get banned for breaking a rule. Placing a bounty and incentivising people to mug someone where the explicit goal (incentive) is to get that person pked? (Circumventing roleplay and mass target mugging them in hopes they make a mistake and get penalized) The very nature and goal being to inflict harm and ruin the other persons roleplay. People will be understandably upset if they feel they were subject to unfair, ooc motivated, non rp driven targetting

Hi, I'm so glad you asked. There's a lot of nuance that goes into it, and I'll focus on the player perspective rather than the staff perspective for the most part.

Generally speaking, muggers are not actual longstanding characters who gravitate towards intense actual real RP. For instance, take a streetboss. Would a streetboss mug someone? Some would, but most of them wont. Would a kapo? Some would, most wont. In these roles, theres an extreme necessity to maintain your character so you can keep RP going smoothly within your faction. You're important. Your loss is devastating. Even for people who are associates who are high earners, and do a lot of restaraunt RP and RP with other factions, the loss is devastating.

What *typically* happens, is muggers are people who dont care if they are pked at all.

Like, when was the last time ever in the last 3 years, have you seen a mugger appeal getting pked?

You haven't. Typically, they just dont give half a shit. And you might say, "Well, they know that they are cooked." But so do the people who break fear RP. It's cut and dry. Open and shut. Same with dons orders. But they all try to claw their way, bend the rules trying to get unpked. The only group that tends not to actually even care enough to appeal are people who mainly mug. Because the work that goes into re-obtaining your wealth is literally getting a pistol and a friend. For non muggers, its rebuilding, running drugs for weeks, doing actual RP to re-establish themselves in the community, oftentimes theres a rank restriction for upper faction members. It's very out of balance.

Now, is that to say all muggers are like this?

Obviously not. You have plenty of actual, real players who really RP a lot who do muggings. Take for instance, the colombos. Very dedicated players, very good RP. Some of them still mug. I've seen higher ranking colombos mug, to send a message. To gain something. It's relevant to their RP, they're not just "me want suit, me rob 12 people." When they're not mugging, which is often, they're doing actual roleplay and embellishing themselves into the community. Shout out colombos

Also, to consider, even in instances in which someone isn't a mugging character , i.e. they've been around for a month and havent touched mugging at all, and then decide to mug, there's still a massive perceived power imbalance.

Who do muggers target? People with the nicest suits. Oftentimes, its characters that are months and months, if not years old. The risk for the mugger is seen as much smaller. Now, from a staff perspective, that doesn't matter at all. But to the community, it matters a lot.

From the staff perspective, our job is to try and balance the community perspective with the fairness of the rules.

So we assess a lot of things when we decide whether or not someone who is mugging a lot is actually doing stuff that would justify them mugging so much. Are they roleplaying? Are they well established? We'll watch them, keep an eye on them. If all they do when they're not mugging is minge and be a retard and not actually put any real effort into roleplaying, then obviously its an extreme problem. Because you tip the scale to "Worthless" in terms of cultivating a really nice roleplay environment.

Obviously, people mugging is fine. I actually encourage mugging. I think it keeps things generally fun for players, and adds actual risk. Same with police existing. Obviously, you need risk from other criminals and police otherwise this game is just cookie clicker. Pick up drugs, sell, rinse repeat until you can get a really cool suit and walk around town. That's boring. Nobody wants to admit it, but the police and hostile criminal RP is incredibly important to the experience of the player.

But, in your case, you were more of the "Worthless" category.

Really, though? I wonder why people hate a hardcore aspect of a game that is almost never engaged with in a balanced or good faith manner- by people who have nothing to lose? Why would someone who has a 2-4 year old character hate a system that’s as brutal as it gets in which someone with a day old character can exploit to cause long lasting or permanent damage to, potentially leading to catastrophic loss (permanent death)? Jeez, I just wonder why someone would have an issue with that? Why are so many bans issued and why do staff who care about the rules and the spirit of the game so adamant about enforcing rules around this thing that’s so easily exploited and used to harass people, target people for OOC/out of game reasons, and literally financially harm people? I just don’t understand why? Please, explain? Why is dickless, coward behavior not rewarded and rooted for? The cool faction leader dudes told me it made me badass and I have aura, so why is the rest of the server so mad? And why do these nerds want to RP? Fucking losers just standing around? Lol? How am I supposed to make money in this game? Why am I banned?

There's nothing wrong with mugging as long as it is within the server rules. It just one of those things that you HAVE to be knowledgeable about do at your own discretion.
