Tomás "El Colmillo" Barrera was a 1973 Federal Police commander who had avoided corruption. In a gioco della malavita where blood bound loyalty, this was hard to find. Yet, when Barrera did not accept the multimillion-dollar payoff from one of the massive cartels, a revenge assassination attempt meant for him found its way to Barrera's family. Three days after he offered information to the government about cartel activity, Barrera's wife and his two sons were found dead in a charred SUV dumped outside his home. After the initial outcry of cops on the scene, nothing happened. Noone arrested. Noone paid off. Just a sense of disgust and disarray. For five years, Barrera was off the grid. Many thought he was dead. He wasn't. He was underground. But where had Barrera gone? He found a group of like-minded individuals: disenfranchised soldiers, nefarious ex-intelligence operatives, and sicarios looking to kill selfish bosses who now banded together with one who wanted justice. They did not form a cartel per se; they were a well-oiled machine ready to fight. They were disciplined, attired (not in actual colors but aligned with goals), and all had revenge on the mind. Their reputation spread because they not only attacked but left the attack up to destiny—no one knew it was coming until it was already done. La Serpiente Negra became associated with underground organization; their logo—the black serpent coiling around a combat knife—became a watchword over great expanses where bustling towns existed no more because law enforcement never arrived due to fear. They have drug trafficking corridors, weapons trafficking routes, fronts for laundering via cryptocurrency, and mercenary operations and contracts throughout the Americas. They control 80% of gun trafficking routes into the United States and international routes for drug trafficking into the Americas. They differ from other major cartels not because of violence. They differ from other cartels because of intelligence. Noone knows who the bosses are; they communicate in code. Noone knows who the captains are; training happens in encrypted bunkers, and their tendrils stretch from jungles to urban operation HQs. They do not need to announce their presence. They do not need a grand entrance to strike. They strike once, and that's all it takes.
